"In the Cleft of His Wings"

Sculpture by Daniel G. Miller

I could hear the creaking and moaning of the cargo ships that rested in oceanic beds as they swayed in the current. Cranes lifted massive loads of cargo onto barges that dipped in the ebb and flow of the water. The cargo loads swayed wildly in the air, tilting and teetering in an alarming manner. Their shadows raced across the pavement and ran rings around the dockworkers.
I wandered up and down the row of docks, casting my eyes about and catching the colors around me like a fever: slate colored barges interspersed with orange ones, all nestled in the olive green water; bright orange hardhats topped the heads of every dockworker, and their faded clothes created a uniform look. I meandered along, out of place--female, dressed in blue jeans and a purple sweatshirt, carrying a camera. The ocean breeze pulled at my hair, making the auburn strands whip around my face and against my eyes.
