Faculty Art Exhibition

Members of North Greenville University's art faculty will present an exhibition of recent works. The artists will be present at the opening to introduce the audience to their work as well as answer questions. The show will run through February 20, 2008. The public is invited to attend.

A Night of the Fine Arts: The North Greenville University faculty collaborate for a night of theatre, music, and art. Performers and performances include: Tex Yeux! - Cheryl Greene, Michael Weaver, Fabio Parrini; Die Forelle - Grant Lewis; Mozart Trio - Michael Weaver, Brent Coppenbarger, Lilia Stoytcheva; Flute and Piano - Martha Kitterman and Fabio Parrini; Adventures of Ivan - Chris Davis;
"HAMLET directs JAQUES, with apologies to William Shakespeare" performed by Corrie Eddleman and Dale Savidge.

The four time Academy Award winning film Chariots Of Fire tells how Eric Liddell refused to run the 100 meters in the 1924 Paris Olympics because a qualifying heat was held on a Sunday. Instead he ran the 400, a race in which he wasn't expected to place. He finished it five meters ahead of the favorite, winning the gold and breaking the world record. Rich Swingle's new one-man play, Beyond the Chariots, picks up where the film left off, showing Eric in his greatest race, as a missionary to war-torn China.

Mary Chung and Amanda Virelles duo piano recital                        tickets available Feb 11

A  two piano recital featuring works by Mozart/Grieg, Balakirev/Glinka, Guastavino, Camilo, Lecuona, and Rachmaninoff

Amanda Virelles began her piano studies in Cuba with Serguei Leschenko, an exponent of the great Russian piano school, continued with Margarita Feodorova at Moscow State Conservatory Tchaikovsky, and received her Master of Fine Arts diploma from the Russian Academy of Music “Gnessins” in Moscow, Russia, under the guidance of Inna Malinina. She also holds a Masters Degree in Piano Performance from The University of Southern Mississippi, where she belonged to the studio of Dr. Lois Leventhal. In 1987 she won First Prize and the Special Prize for best Cuban and Latin-American music performance in the Amadeo Roldan Piano Competition. After this success she was given a full scholarship to study in Russia. She appeared as a soloist with several orchestras in Europe and South America under the direction of renowned conductors such as Yoshikatsu Fukumura, Dmitir Manolov, Fillipo Zigante, Kimbo Ishii - Eto, and Miguel Harth-Bedoya. Recently she appeared with the USM Symphony and Chamber Orchestras under the baton of Jay Dean and Alejandro Drago.

Mary Chung, a doctoral candidate at the University of Southern Mississippi, holds a BA in music from North Greenville College in South Carolina. Prior to her studies in the US, Chung graduated from the Conservatory of Music in the Dominican Republic.Her previous awards include 1st place in the 11th "Luis A. Ferre" piano competition in Puerto Rico, Alternate Winner in Mississippi’s MTNA Young Artist Auditions, Honorable Mention in South Carolina’s MTNA Young Artist Auditions, and 1st place in several competitions in the Dominican Republic.

Art Exhibition

Emerging Artists Spotlight.  This annual event spotlights works by Marilyn Holloway.  It is an invitational exhibition which gives the artist a venue to display her talents.  She has  painted  on porcelain (China) for 25 years.  The show will run through March 26, 2008.

Cheryl Greene and Fabio Parrini. A program of American Spirituals, Opera, Art Song and Musical Theatre selections composed by John Carter, Kurt Weill, Marc Blitzstein, Gian Carlo Menotti, Irving Fine, Ben Moore, Leonard Bernstein and Jeanine Tesori.

 

March 2008 Events

 

March 27, 2008 at 8 pm in Hamlin Recital Hall. Piace Duo Recital
Rebeccah Parker Downs, cello and Benjamin Downs, piano
Benjamin Downs and Rebeccah Parker Downs began collaborating together in 2000 when they premiered a new composition for piano and cello written for them. Since that time the Piace Duo have been featured performers at the Chautauqua Institute in Chautauqua, New York, the Brevard Music Festival in Brevard, North Carolina, and, most recently, the Bowdoin International Music Festival in Bowdoin, Maine. They have also been heard in Cincinnati Conservatory of Music’s Werner Hall and Watson Hall, and the University of Illinois’ Smith Recital Hall. Rebeccah also frequently performs with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, where she occupies the position of principal cello.  They are both studying at the Cincinatti College-Conservatory of Music with Yehuda Hanani and James Tocco.

Graduating seniors from the North Greenville University art program will be displaying work produced in order to fulfill their graduation requirements. The exhibiting artists will be present during the opening to talk about their work. The show will run through April 9, 2008. The public is invited to attend.

Spring Choir Concert

Celebrate the advent of spring with the NGU Concert Choir. From the stirring sounds of the classical repertoire to contemporary works of music hot off the press this is an evening sure to delight audiences of any age.

Juried Student Art Exhibition.

This annual exhibition features artwork produced by North Greenville University students. At the opening prizes for first, second and third place will be awarded. Students are invited to enter their artwork in this juried event. All works must be submitted to the NGU Art Department by April 10, 2008. The show will run through April 30, 2008. The public is invited to attend this event.

A tremendously impressive drama that received the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play. The fortunes of the Keller and Deever families collide in this story set just after WWII. One man is sent to prison; one goes free and becomes wealthy. One son is missing in action, one is in love with the daughter of the imprisoned father, and one returns to set the record straight. A powerful exploration of guilt and responsibility by one of the greatest American playwrights of the 20th century. Directed by Dale Savidge and featuring Corrie Eddleman, Cora Flottman, Chris Hecke and Ben Porch.
